Maudie and Jane: on the face of things the chasm between them is unbridgeable. They come from different worlds, from two realities apparently in conflict. Jane is young, attractive and pushy with a brillant journalistic career ahead of her; Maudie is old, dirty and troublesome. Yet from a chance encounter an unexpected friendship grows. They touch off deep sympathies in each other that evolve into a powerful and indestructible symbiosis which changes their lives.
Inspired by Doris Lessing's The Diaries of Jane Somers (first published as two separate novels, The Diary of a Good Neighbour and If Only the Old Could), this play creates a sensitive and perceptive portrait of two great female characters. Info and photograph from The British Council/Italy |
