From the book jacket: Doris Lessing was born in 1919 in Persia, where her father was a bank official. When she was five years old she went with her family to Southern Rhodesia and spent her childhood on a farm in Mashonaland. She was educated chiefly at the Dominican Convent in Salisbury, Southern Rhodesia, and since she left school has earned her living in various ways - as a telephone operator, Hansard typist, and shorthand typist.
Doris Lessing now lives in England and intends to stay here 'for a while, at any rate.' The Grass is Singing is her first novel, and she is now busy writing another.
